The operating system war!!!
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:23:51 pm »
ok were all familier with it and until Thursday night i had never actively used a mac. (i got my new MacBook Thursday night.)

while the mac commercails are walking all over microsoft. they ave virtually no drop in sales. then of course there are the linux distro's. i dual booted fedora core for about a year. so since i have some form of experiance in each major operating system i will now present my pro's and cons for each. feel free to disagree on anything you wish.

Windows...

pros:

ok so i have been using windows since the only version out was 3.7 some mac look-alike version (very strange and i may have the version number wrong suffice to say it as one of the first few...) the great thing about windows is the fact that everyone develops for it....always. there are very few popular programs out there that don't have a vrsion that runs on windows.

cons:

every script kiddie on the planet has hacked a windows machine... or given it a virus etc... while the windows system is "closed kernal" there are still a plethora of thing you can do to protect yourself. the only bad thing is that YOU have to do it. and it is hard, confusing, and time consuming... then there is the whole restart required thing...

Mac...

pros:

ok so while most devs also produce for macs the problem is that the crackers i count on to crack the program then distribute it across limewire, bittorrent, etc. don't crack it for mac...(bastards...) so while legal programs are easy to come by the illegal route is harder. the open kernal is nice as well as the powerful unix commands. thr reduced number of viruses for the mac system means that you don't have to be as carfull with what porn sites you vist or what emails you open, a nice feature to be sure.

cons:

so the whole thing behind mac is the no more restarts, viruses, compatability problems, etc.... i would like to point out that every single one of those things still happen just no where near as often. like i said before the whole program thing.

linux...

Pros:

honestly i love linux it rules... i really went and tried to get a virus by downloading programs i knew to have tojans and the like i visited sites that i knew ere shady, the whole nine yards... end result no viruses no spyware.... i love that. the posibilities fr custimization are endless. learning how you can custimize it is a bit difficult of it isn't your first system and you have the habits of a mac or windows machine still polluting your mind. other than that everything is fast... damned fast.

cons:

there s really only one thing i can think of... nobody makes programs for linux.... NOBODY.... don't get me wrong that was an exsasuration (i butchered the spelling on that one :P) there are a few good programs but the linix market is slow...

there you have it my very vauge opinions on the three major contenders. there are many more if you feel that your operating system kicks ass and it isn't here speak up. ill install it on my pc laptop and see how it lives up to my standards.

Ok...Now I need to save up to get a good computer and get Linux! Or turn this one into Linux and keep the one with more ram for windows...All I know is I've heard lots of good things about Linux and I have only seen about 3 programs that work with Linux XD. As for Macs...are they better than windows? I've heard so many bad things about them it's amazing, Linux, I only hear good things.

I think Linux might be the best but until I've tried it I will say Windows XP (Because I haven't heard even 1 good hting about Vista).

i am on a MacBook right now and so far i have had to restart it twice and had two programs crash. thats about it. so the are fairly un-problematic. as for windows i look at it like i would swiss cheese...hold it up to my eye and look at all the holes. xp is great if you know what your doing but or the average user out to use it for email and text editing i would say Linux all the way because  if you only use your computer for e-mail and text any way whats the use of all the extra problems of xp. as for vista it will be a solid OS when microsoft gets there sh!^ togeather and fixes all the bugs and gaping holes. so at the moment vista sucks. the only good thing about it is the look.

Ok, so what would be the best for gaming? and I assume Linux is the best for working but with the lack of games created for Linux, it wouldn't be too good for gaming (I assume).

Vista claims that it is the best for gaming, what is your opinion?

like i said windows (regardless of version nt, 200, xp, vista) will have the most software compatability however the down side is that it will also inevitably have the most virus compatability as well. so if you want to game i sugest you use windows xp (using vista is just asking for problems) and a good anti-virus and anti-spyware/malware (anti-virus: http://www.free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 and  anti-spyware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)

you can install windows games on linux there is just alot of work involved. i used it for runing runescape and all that just because it worked fast and never crashed (also i never once had to restart it :)) but i am no expert in linux i though freddy ran ubuntu which is a different distro than i had so you could always talk to him about the compatability of his distro...

Yep.

Linux is the most stable option.

Reason is: Its lightweight, Means it can hold more than Windows (Servers)

i did the whole dual-boot linux phase the problem was i was doing it on my 30gb. dell inspirion 8500 so i had very limited space to work with. it was a very conclusive test as i gave both patitions the exact same amount of space and it was immidiatly ovious which os work better with more or less space and how effiecent those os's were with the space given.

as one might assume the linux partition worked better and even had a setting where it would compress everything to make the best use of your space (note: the compression affected the performance of the programs/music/images/etc in no way shape or form it was like it wasn't even compressed.) so i was really able to fit 20 or so gbs of data in 15 gbs of space.

the windows partition ran out of space fast even wit the compresson setting turned on. also it ran slow and froze up alot. also with windows my laptop will frequently overheat but with linux i have never once had it overheat and freeze. this is a computer specific stat but i found it interesting.

Linux's problems are its hardware incompatibility, and its un-user friendlyness. For people used to windows, that are either un computer savvy or are too set in their ways, even something like ubuntu might be too big of a leap, since there's the large difference in programs available and the way you do things.
