What Are We Coming To? Will We Ever Pay For Music Again?
« on: March 09, 2007, 03:27:43 am »
In a world were the internet is at large. Downloading has become a big source for music. I personally download music regularly, and a lot of my music collection is made up of downloaded music. But stop. Think. Think about what happens when you download music. An artist will spend hours writing music, practicing it and recording it. Then we hop of limewire or another product of p2p applications and download it. Without paying a cent. How do those artists feel? After you have just downloaded there music for free. After they have spent countless hours getting it out.

If that was your job and you tried to make money of it. Would you like it you never made any sales but everyone had your music. Now a lot of artists are rich. But it doesn’t change the fact that you should pay for music. It’s like working in a business and people steal your products instead of buying them.

A big source for downloading music is the program; limewire, it runs on the Gnutella network. And is a big source of music and other files. Literally anyone can grab the program and start downloading music from other people on the network. But is this fair? Is this what we are coming to? Will you ever pay for music again? It seems no. Music is available easily without paying. Mainly because of p2p applications and warez sites.

Is this fair for artists to be putting out music if we are just going to download it off some p2p network? I don’t think it is. And we should all realize that it isn’t fair for them. Bands will get lower record sales and less profits; even though there music is getting distributed at large, to a wide variety of people. I started to realize this when I was looking at the record sales for some bands. Even though the bands were hugely popular there record sales weren’t that high. It alarmed me even more when I was watching CSI. They were talking about a singer. One of the characters in it said she would have to go and “download” some of his music. She didn’t say try, buy or borrow a CD. She said she would “download” it.

With music so easily available for free. Why should you pay for it. Why pay for music when you can just go on limewire or albumbase.com and just download it? As the internet expands music will be more easily available for all. Now I’m not suggesting to just stop downloading music all together (although I recommend doing that). I’m trying to get the point out that you should support the artists you like. Buy the occasional album or t-shirt.

You have the right to distribute this file as whole. Get the message across!

question: You download music, yet you recommend everyone else to stop downloading.
are you planning to stop downloading yourself? And buy the cd?

Personally, I don't download music because of the crappy mp3 format, which lacks detail, dynamic range, is overcompressed, and has certain artifacts in it which disturb me during a listening session...
so I buy cd's, and vinyl too.

Rock on,
Basite.
Life is music.

This would belong in Discussions & Debates ;)
A good admin can make a good forum
But overpowered mods can destroy that ;)

Personally, Every program on my computer was stolen/downloaded and I download full albums using Bittorrent. I am only 13 years old and my mom or dad didn't finish high school and my dad doesn't have a job or live with me. So, Me buying programs like Photoshop and Buying 100s of albums would be my whole years worth of money.

Though, When I get older, and finish collage, I will buy all my Music using online stores like Itunes and Urge.

I download music, but I try not to do it in great quantity. Not necessarily because I feel bad for the artists, but because there are still people out there prosecuting music pirates, and when they lose the case, they can be charged anywhere from $75 to $60,000 a song. Well, that's what a newspaper article said, not sure it that's accurate. :P

Most give you a warning and then they take you to court. I got a warning for download Microsoft Office 2003 and didn't get sued. Also, later got caught downloading Flight Simulator X and didn't get sued. Also, If you caught on, DON'T DOWNLOAD MICROSOFT PRODUCTS FROM BITTORRENT.

Doesn't the artist get his money long before it hits the internet?

If the artist really loves writing and performing their music then it shouldn't matter too much, but when they just write and perform for money then they deserve to get ripped off. So in short, no I will not pay for music.

Good point, and as jason said, I think they do get paid before there's even a chance to download it.

Even if they love singing and writing music they still deserve there money for there hard effort. Concert sales and Music sales is pretty much there job and source of money. They deserve all the money they should get.

Well, even if they do deserve it, it won't happen. People will always download music.

actuelay, it might end soon. or atleast with P2P servers like limewire and Bearshear, my schools just developed a software that they uploaded to there server, that detects p2p programs downloading music or music or what ever and kicks you off the server..

They call it Iccarus.
Supposed to be state of the art stuff.

Im gonna see if I can get my hands on there software :)
